Google has finally acquired HTC... at least a part of it. Contrary to expectations, Big G didn't buy the entire HTC brand, opting instead to bring over members of HTC's smartphone team over to it's own side of the field.
The deal saw members of HTC's smartphone team brought over to Google, along with a non-exclusive license to HTC's intellectual property. HTC, in return, gets $1.1 billion and retains the brand name, remaining free to continue working on products like the HTC Vive, and even its own smartphones in the future.
Google's SVP of Hardware, Rick Osterloh announced the deal by writing in a blog post, "With this agreement, a team of HTC talent will join Google as part of the hardware organization. These future fellow Googlers are amazing folks we’ve already been working with closely on the Pixel smartphone line, and we're excited to see what we can do together as one team."
