Mahindra & Mahindra, one of the largest domestic automobile companies, has announced that it plans to launch driverless tractors in the Indian market by 2019.
The company will offer the driverless tractors in multiple variants ranging from 20 HP to 100 HP, and pricing of the lower HP versions is expected to be kept below Rs. 1 Lakh. The driverless vehicles will be able to automatically align themselves, lift/lower the work tools from the ground when required and travel in a straight line all on their own.
Pawan Goenka, M&M's Managing Director, revealed that the biggest challenge for the company is to get regulatory approval from the Indian government, and hopes that policies governing such vehicles are implemented soon.
